About US SAILING

Picking the Olympic sailing team? Sailboat racing? Learn to sail? Teach sailing to students?

All fall under the umbrella of US SAILING, the nation's foremost organization dedicated to all things sailing.

US SAILING is the national governing body of sailing. As a nonprofit, member-based organization, its mission is to promote excellence in sailing in the United States.

Founded in 1897, it selects and trains the US Olympic and Paralympic sailing teams. It also offers a comprehensive instruction program for adults who want to learn to sail in keelboats. A wide range of courses include learn-to-sail, basic and bareboat cruising, coastal navigation and passage making.

A host of education programs offer training for sailing instructors and powerboat operation, as well as training in sailboat racing, judging, and umpiring.

A management staff headquartered in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, supports US SAILING’s national network of volunteers, member organizations, and sailing schools.

US SAILING affirms the principles of good sportsmanship, safety, fair play, equal opportunity, and fun in sailing by people of all ages and abilities.
